People across Utah are preparing to mark the anniversary of the September 11th attacks.
Governor Gary Herbert has ordered that all state-owned buildings fly their flags at half-staff on Tuesday, exactly eleven years since the September 11th attacks. A statewide canned food kickoff is also planned.
College campuses will also be marking the occasion. The Utah State College Republicans will be planting 2,977 miniature flags on campus. And Southern Utah University plans a flag ceremony and coinciding service project.
Pam Branin, the associate director of SUU’s Community Engagement Center, explains why they decided to repaint fire hydrants in the community.
"It's important to recognize that fire personnel were heavily involved in responding to the 9/11 events, and it's a way to pay tribute and respect them. And at the same time, like I said, do something that's needed."
One Utahn has chosen an unique way to recognize the tragedy of 9/11. Washington City resident Alan Foote plans to sing Lee Greenwood’s patriotic song “God Bless the U.S.A.” 911 times, 19 times per hour, for two days. His goal is to complete his epic warbling by Tuesday morning.
