A portion of Logan’s Main Street will be re-striped this weekend to allow for more lanes of traffic. The two blocks between 200 and 400 North will be painted on Sunday to make room for three lanes in each direction.
The decision to re-stripe was made by the Utah Department of Transportation, Logan City and local businesses in response to increased traffic and congestion in the area.
UDOT’s Victor Saunders said many drivers primarily use the stretch of Main Street to get to Highway 89, causing bottlenecking in the area.
“This re-striping will give us an additional lane in each direction through that area so that we can get those turners into position to make that right hand turn without occupying a general traffic lane,” Saunders said.
All street parking in the two block section will be eliminated—a move Saunders said area businesses were 100 percent behind.
“They understand that congestion on Main Street is not good for them and they all, pretty much all of them, have sufficient parking off-street that they can handle this,” Saunders said.
Idling cars and Logan’s winter air quality were also a factor in the decision to re-stripe.
Main Street will remain open during the operation.
