Logan City Encourages Holiday Recycling With Extra Pickup

The Christmas season brings with it gifts and decorations, but also extra boxes, wrapping paper and many other items that can be recycled. In order to accommodate the extra recyclable material, the Logan City Environmental Department announced this week it will add another collection day to the regular recycle pickup schedule.

"We collect recycling every other week," said Emily Malik, Conservation Coordinator for Logan City. "But during the holiday, the special holiday waste collection schedule, we collect everyone's recycling every week."

According to Malik, during the time from December 26 to January 7 residents will have recycling collected on their normal collection day both weeks. The standard pickup routine is scheduled to resume the second week in January.

Though many holiday materials are recyclable, Logan City reminds the public that there are many items which are not.

"We really don't want things like bows, ribbons, packing peanuts, the Styrofoam material that comes with electronics, batteries, we also don't want boxes that have plastic windows in there," said Malik. "You can put the box in the recycling can if you'll remove the plastic before putting it in the recycling can. Also, nothing that has a foil or a metallic aspect to it, so some wrapping paper and greeting cards have that."

The average person generates 4.5 pounds of trash every day and although the EPA estimates that 75 percent of solid waste is recyclable, only about 30 percent is recycled. For more information on the new pickup schedule, visit the Logan City website.
