Historic Steam Railcar, Labor of Love with $3 Million Price Tag

An all-volunteer crew at the Ogden Railyard has almost finished building the coal car, or tender, that will carry fuel for the Denver and Rio Grande RR engine #223.

The Golden Spike chapter of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society is 17 years into its locomotive restoration project.

Engine #223 was built in 1881 and worked in Colorado until 1941. It was displayed at Salt Lake City's Liberty Park and Rio Grande Railroad Station until being moved to the Utah State Railroad museum at Ogden's Union Station.

Before it rolls down the rails under its own steam it will cost over $3 million to restore.
