Herbert Chooses new Director of Utah Department Of Transportation

Governor Gary R. Herbert named Carlos Braceras the executive director of UDOT Monday, to replace reitred director John Njord.  Braceras is now responsible for UDOT’s 1,800 employees and the design, construction, and maintenance of Utah’s 6,000-mile system of roads and highways.

“Carlos Braceras is a man of outstanding capability and extraordinary expertise,” said Herbert. “He understands Utah and he understands Utah’s transportation system. His well-articulated vision for Utah’s future transportation system focuses on our economy, optimal mobility, maximum value for tax dollars and our unique quality of life.”

Braceras said his co-workers will continue to do their best work, despite the change.

“I have great confidence in the people I work with everyday to continue to pioneer new ways to address Utah’s transportation challenges and help the Governor achieve his four cornerstones,” Braceras said.

Braceras joined UDOT in 1986 and worked in multiple positions, including  deputy director for the last 12 years, chief geotechnical engineer and as a roadway design engineer. Prior to joining UDOT, Braceras worked as a well-site geologist doing oil and gas exploration and development. He received an undergraduate degree in Geology from the University of Vermont and an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Utah. He is a registered professional engineer.
