The Escalante Canyons Art Festival and competition is scheduled to take place Sept. 20 through 28 in Escalante, Utah. The festival, commemorating the artist and lover of the Escalante Canyons, Everett Ruess, will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year.
The event begins with a plein air art competition starting Sept. 20. Artists from around the world will come to the small town of Escalante and attempt to recapture the wild beauty of the landscape in their art until Sept. 26, when the competition ends.
“We generally have around a hundred entries in the competition,” said Sandy Larson, director of the festival. “We have two categories, and we give over $9,000 in awards away.”
The week culminates in the Escalante Canyons Art Festival, a weekend full of art, music, speakers, crafts, food and an art auction on Sept. 27 and 28.
Highlights of this year’s festival include NPR commentator and critically acclaimed author, Craig Childs, artist-in-residence Wayne Geary, Royden Card as the featured artist of the festival, and Dave McGraw and Crow Wing.
